Make The Most of Back To School Night with these Five Questions

By Susan Cowdrick, Ring Around The Rosie Preschool, Owner September 8, 2019

You've survived the back-to-school supply list and first day pictures! Now onto Back to School Night! Here are 5 questions to help you make the most out of the time with your child's teacher. Remember, Back to School Night is not a time to discuss your child specifically, so you will want to keep your questions general in nature.

1. How will you assess my child’s learning?

Teachers design their curriculum and tasks to help students reach specific academic and social goals. Be familiar with their program. It probably will be an online system.

2. What is the best way to reach you?
E-mail, text or phone calls. With so many ways to communicate, it is important to make sure you and the teacher are on the same page. Don’t forget parents still play a big part of their child’s education.

3. What steps will you take if a child begins to struggle academically?

It is important to know what the process is for getting help if your child is struggling with their schoolwork. The last thing you want to happen is to find out during the last week of school that your child doesn’t understand important concepts they need to master in order to move on to the next grade.

4. What are the main concepts students should walk away from your class knowing?
You want to be clear about the academic expectations for your child. This will help you to monitor your child’s progress and to recognize when they might need support in certain areas.

5. In what ways will my child’s learning be connected to the real world?

Sometimes, students don’t see how school assignments relate to their lives outside of school. If connections are made through learning with something they enjoy, chances are they will remember the learning concept for the rest of their lives. Example: If they love sports, how can math assignments help them create interesting team statistics?

Learning starts as soon as a child is born. We need to give children every opportunity to stimulate their brain cells through play at an early age. Always remember that parents should be supportive and helpful to their child’s teacher. Stay Positive. Recognize how hard the great majority of teachers work and how much they care about their students, your child. Encourage a love of learning!
